The Looking Glass Self_Concept-01aThe Looking Glass Self_Concept-01aI did this shot with several others of this craft and jewlry vendor in downtown Marigot in St Martin. ,April,2015. This was one of the shots that did not clearly come out with my original intentions. But being a student of people and life issues I held on to it.Even used with a diferent title and description but the photographers and 1x did not buy into my idea. However I see the real use for it now. Because more than never I believe is its real time to show. The image speaks of of the concept of identity. If my memory serves me right the theory of of the looking glass self argues that we use referents people on the outside to help us understand who we really are. These people are given the title or tag as significant others. So identity according to this an outside phenomena leads to an inward understanding. That's how your identity is formed and built.

I did this shot and several others of this craft and jewelry vendor in downtown Marigot in St Martin. ,April,2015.

This was one of the shots that did not clearly come out with my original intentions-to capture the subject's engaging eyes in the mirror.

But something made me  hold on to it. I first used  it with a different

title and description mainly for feedback on 1x curated site but the photographers there

,in the critique forum, did not really buy into my idea. Notwithstanding that, I knew that I usually see the real

use for something after. I believed I picked that up from my maternal grand mother

who used to hold on to things even though she did not need them at the time.

And I am suggesting , that this is the best time to reveal the image.

The image speaks of the concept of identity.

If my memory serves me right the theory of the looking glass self argues that we use

referents people on the outside to help us understand who we really are. These people

are given the title or tag as significant others. So identity ,according to the theory, is basically

an outside phenomenon which leads to an inward understanding   and/or interpretation.

That's how your identity is formed and built(remember mirror ,mirror on the wall).

The concept seems very plausible. Perhaps that's why we have so many followers and few leaders.

Because I can't see self assurance being built this way.

p.s I return to my blogs today after taking a brief stay away to see a black out on this post. In a sense I intended to change the original image to this one. If my memory serves me right the original was in color. This one, to me, is a better image for the depiction and it is an appropriate expression to demonstrate my feelings of empathy to my friends of the two joined countries.
